Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

What do you treat?

My clients often struggle with:

➡ Trouble maintaining personal, professional, or social relationships

➡ Finding meaningful connection in their relationships

➡ Overwhelming feelings of stress or emotional numbness

➡ Keeping it together on the outside, but feeling exhausted on the inside

➡ Struggling to find a healthy balance or routine in life

➡ A sense of losing control in their life circumstances

➡ Using substances to cope with frustrations and disappointments

➡ Feeling confused by their relationship challenges

I offer in person therapy for adults and online therapy for adults across Florida. I work with clients navigating relationship challenges, anxiety, perfectionism, lack of connection, conflict in relationships, and feeling stuck in problems. Therapy with me is designed for people who want direct, honest feedback with practical guidance on how to move forward with their most difficult relationship issues.

I only work with adults who are located in the state of Florida at the time of service.

Where are you located?

I have offices located in Tampa, FL and Winter Haven, FL. We can also meet virtually online anywhere in the State of Florida. Due to license restrictions, I am not able to offer services to anyone who is not located in Florida.

If you are an out-of-state resident interested in services, I can offer counseling services for you but only while you are located in Florida.

What is counseling going to do for me?

There are many benefits to counseling and each client usually has their own agenda of what they want from counseling. Clients typically find that counselors can be a tremendous asset to increasing personal growth, improving interpersonal relationships, family concerns, relationship troubles, and the daily hassles of life.

Clients usually seek counseling for encouragement, problem-solving skills, support, and healthy coping strategies while struggling with things like anxiety, depression, grief, relationship troubles, addiction, unresolved childhood issues, and stress management.

Clients often get a fresh perspective on difficult problems they’ve tried to solve on their own.

Some of the benefits available from counseling include:

Learning new ways to cope with stress and anxiety

Better understanding yourself and your goals and values

Improving your self-esteem

Boosting self-confidence

Discovering new ways to solve problems

Developing skills for improving communication and listening

Transforming anger, grief, depression, and other emotional pressures

Dissolving old behavior patterns and developing new ones

Can’t I just talk to my best friend or family?

The difference is between someone who can do something, and someone who has the training and experience to do that same thing professionally. A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, therapy is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.” Lastly, if your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion, if you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that once you are feeling better you could start avoiding that person so you aren’t reminded of this difficult time in your life.

How long will counseling take?

Unfortunately, this is not possible to say in a general FAQ page. I've worked with people for a couple months and others for 3 years. In our first session, we will discuss how often we should meet. That frequency will change over time. In the beginning of our work, I recommend weekly sessions. To get the most out of your therapy and make lasting changes, I strongly recommend we meet weekly for a minimum of 6 months.

If you'd like to meet more often than once a week, we can also arrange that. We will review your treatment plan and progress periodically. Once you've begun to experience gains in your treatment goals, we will review your plan and meet less frequently. This allows for more practice time of your new skills between sessions.

Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?

Not at all! People who ask for help know when they need it and have the ability to reach out. Everyone needs help now and then. You already have some strengths that you’ve used before, that for whatever reason isn’t working right now.

Perhaps this problem feels overwhelming and is making it difficult to access your past strengths. In our work together, I’ll help you identify what those strengths are and how to implement them again in what is happening now.

Why shouldn’t I just take medication?

Medication is a great tool for folks who just can't get their symptoms under control on their own. However, medication alone cannot solve all issues because it only treats symptoms. Our work together is designed to explore the root of the issue, dig deep into your behavior and teach strategies that can help you accomplish your personal and/or relational goals. The benefit you get from therapy can be similar to medication, depending on how well you use the process and put into practice what you learn.

My partner and I are having problems. Should we be in individual counseling or come together?

If you are concerned about your relationship we would initially work with both of you together. After this work, if one of you would like to continue in individual sessions, she could work with only one of you. It is not helpful to move from individual into couple’s work with the same therapist because of potential trust issues. These instances are referred out to another therapist.

However, individual sessions are often done as part of couples counseling to address the issues discovered in couples sessions when needed. These are different than receiving psychotherapy with a therapist for individual mental health treatment.

Questions About Sabrina

What are your credentials?

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the State of Florida. My license number is MT4452.

Why are you a therapist?

I never wanted to go to grad school - so I first became certified as a life coach so I could help people. While I love the approach, I eventually wanted more research and evidence-based tools to help people. I originally because a therapist to help couples struggling with infertility and pregnancy loss out of personal experience and lack of supportive providers available at the time. Over time, the joy I've experienced working with couples became couples where we could talk business, relationships, and the interplay of how it was all affecting them and their family. So it became apparent it was time to change my focus to working specifically with those couples.

What's your story?

I am happily married to my husband, Justin and have been for going on almost 20 years. Together we share 3 children. I attend church and have my whole life, so my Christian worldview informs my approaches and belief systems in therapy. I can incorporate them or leave them out - I've worked with fellow Christians and atheists - it doesn't matter to me. If that bothers you though, I'm not a good fit for you.

Have questions? Just ask me - I am open to disclosing life experience with clients when it's appropriate and helpful to their treatment goals.

What's your style?

My clients would tell you that I'm honest, direct, personable, and down to earth. I'm going to remember your kids' names, that exciting thing you shared 3 sessions ago, and where you're headed on vacation because you aren't just a number to me.

I'm most likely going to show up in jeans with a graphic t-shirt on. I was born and raised in Central Florida, so I'm pretty laid back. A lot of my clients love that - if that's not cool with you then we won't likely be a good fit.

Fee & Payment Questions

What are your fees?

My hourly base rate is $165 per hour. Additional time or services is based on this rate. For example, 15 minutes of text therapy would be $40.

Couples sessions are required to be 85 minutes with a fee of $245.

Intensives are $165 per hour and scheduled in either 3 hour or 6 hour increments.

Retreats are priced based on a number of factors and will vary. An individualized quote will be given if this is selected as a treatment option.

I do have a limited number of sliding scale spots available for a discounted service rate. Sliding scale is based on a base rate of $125 per hour.

Do you take insurance?

I do not accept insurance, but I will provide a superbill to you if you'd like to pursue reimbursement from your insurance company. You'll need to contact them directly for details and requirements for that.

There are several reasons I chose not to contract with insurance companies:

➡ If we submit claims to insurance companies, they require me to provide a diagnosis. In my experience, this is overused and unnecessary when it comes to relationship counseling.

➡ Insurance companies have rules about reimbursement that are not always fair or favorable to the client.

➡ I value privacy and not accepting insurance ensures I can offer that.

➡ Insurance companies put a limit on services between therapists and clients. I believe your treatment should be up to you.

➡ Insurance offers incredibly low rates to therapists given our education and time invested to become licensed. No one likes being underpaid and undervalued.

If you need a referral to a clinician who accepts insurance, please contact the member phone number with your insurance company for a list of available providers.

What payment methods do you accept?

Debit card, credit card, HSA/FSA cards. I use a payment processor called IvyPay which stores your card information on file. The card on file will be charged the morning of your appointment and payment failures will need to be corrected in session. Payments are collected same day as service.

Do you charge for cancellations?

If you cancel 24 hours prior to your appointment, then you will not be charged.

Same day cancellations, missed appointments, or no shows are charged a $75 fee.

Can someone else pay for me?

Yes, that is no problem at all. You will need to complete an authorization to have a third party pay for your therapy services. Just let me know if that's how you plan on paying and we'll get you squared away.

Appointment Questions

What can I expect in my first session?

Our first session will be 85 minutes long. During this session I will gather an extensive history on you and your relationship. We will then establish treatment goals and answer any questions you have. Sometimes the history questions do bleed over to a couple of sessions and that's okay too.

When are appointments available?

Appointments are scheduled Mondays and Wednesday mornings for telehealth or in person appointments in the Winter Haven office. Appointments are scheduled for in person appointments in the Tampa office. Hours for sessions start at 10:00 am and the last appointment is schedule at 4:00 pm. I typically schedule intensives on Thursdays or Fridays.

I do offer appointments outside of these windows on a limited basis under special circumstances.

What appointments do you offer?

I offer a range of appointment times and styles depending on the client's needs. Options include 55 minute sessions, 85 minute sessions, half day intensive therapy sessions, whole day intensive therapy sessions, and even weekend couples retreats.

What if I can't make my scheduled appointment?

My client portal will send you reminder notifications prior to our scheduled time to meet. If you cannot keep the scheduled appointment, please contact the office to cancel with 24 hours notice to avoid the cancellation fee. Same day appointment cancellations are subject to a $75 fee.

Communication Questions

Can we talk between sessions?

Yes we can! I offer text based therapy services in a HIPPA compliant client platform, phone calls, and unscheduled sessions when available. I purposely maintain a very small caseload so that I can offer these premium options to clients as needed.

If our communication takes more than 10 minutes, you will be billed for the time in increments of 15 minutes which is currently $40.00.

Can I call you any time?

You're welcome to call the office number at any time - day or night 24/7. During office hours, I will answer if I can or you can leave a voicemail and I will respond as soon as I can - even on the weekends or in the evenings.

If our communication takes more than 10 minutes, you will be billed for the time in increments of 15 minutes which is currently $40.00.

If you have a crisis or emergency, please call 911 or 211.

Can I text you any time?

If you're a current client, you're welcome to send a text any time 24/7. Don't worry about interrupting me or waking me up at night. Same with phone calls - I will respond as soon as I can - even on the weekends or in the evenings. If you have a crisis or emergency, please call 911 or 211.

If our communication takes more than 10 minutes, you will be billed for the time in increments of 15 minutes which is currently $40.00.

You’ll receive an invitation to secure texting after our first session.

Can I email you any time?

Yes, please feel free to send an email any time. However, please be aware of two very important things:

➡ Your personal email is not secure, so keep that in mind when you send a message about anything you’d like to keep private. Use the text service or phone call instead for personal or private communications.

➡ Florida state law does not allow me to provide sessions via email.

How quickly will you answer?

For the most part, the only thing going to keep me from answering my clients within any given 6 hour time span is if I'm sleeping. If I'm having personal time with my family after hours, I'm not going to answer right away. My during business hours, I'm going to answer as soon as I can. Please know that if I am with clients I will not respond immediately as the client in session has my full attention (as will you when we are in session).
